Extreme Cold Weather and the Impact on Furnaces and Hot Water Tanks

The extreme cold can impact the performance of both your furnace and hot water tanks. New furnaces and hot water tanks have their fresh air intakes and exhausts run through the side of the home. Both units have sensors that force them to automatically shut off in the instances that they are not bringing in fresh air and exhausting properly. The extreme cold can cause ice buildup on either pipe or both. Look outside to make sure that nothing is blocking the fresh air intake and the exhaust (this includes ice build-up). This is not alarming or unusual, if there is ice buildup on these pipes, just carefully clear away any debris or ice from both the fresh air intake and exhaust pipes including the screens inside the pipes.
